How to use Sierra 881U with GPS Function

To those who are using Sierra Wireless Aircard 881U with GPS enable, it is a waste of advantage for Sierra 881U users if they don’t fully utilize this functionality. So how to use your GPS module in 881U ?
1. Firstly you need to have Sierra 3G Watcher GPS Edition can download on the link below :
Downloaded a total of 4379 times
*Please take note that you have unlocked GPS version of Sierra 881U. Otherwise please unlocked it first by read this tutorial.
2. Second,you need to have Garmin Mobile PC installed on your laptop.
*If you have insufficient fund to buy Garmin Mobile PC please contact me .How i can help you ? Guess How ? 
Step to Use the GPS navigation with Seirra 881U
1. Plug your USB 881U modem to your laptop.
2. Start your 3G Watcher
3. Go to Tools->MP Physical Interface-> Select USB-> OK (one time setup)
4. Go to Tools-> Display GPS
5. On the GPS Monitor window, click the Play button to start tracking and locking to your location. Make sure you have clear sky above you.
6. Wait for the signal bar to turn from red, to yellow, then green, meaning it successfully locked the satellites. If failed, try again until you have the location fixed.
7. You will have your screen like this.
8. Then, you are ready to use your Garmin Mobile PC. Just start the program and it will automatically detect your GPS connection and you are set ready to GO!
9. Enjoy your GPS navigation. Drive safely.

Dear Friends,
I have a Sierra 881U… it worked well but last week I was wrong cause I downloaded and run AT & T “Binary update Tool” from your Website. It updated the firmware to the version F1_2_3_15BT and ruined my device. Now it doesn’t work.
Do you know how to restore and replace it, or where I can find the right firmware (not AT&T)?
Please help me if you can.

I use 881 PCMCIA. I purchased out side US. It is from AT&T.
I m not sure it is unblocked or not yet!! but I can use with my local SIM. I want to how to use the GPS function of it? I have Garmin MapSource. But I do not have Garmin Mobile PC. can u pls help.

I have exactly the same problem with Desperate O
now my sierra 881 u version is F1_2_3_15BT, and it doesn’t work with the indosat sim card….
so do you suggest download your posted link and then flash it to that firmware?

I just use this sierra 881u for several days, and it’s already unlock for it’s gps. What i’d like to know how come my modem can lose it’s power (red flashing light, and then it turn to green again). And once more, my modem sometimes got restarted after trying to activate it’s gps function, the 3g watcher informed me that no device or sometimes after it gor restarted, the 3g watcher said call failed. Is it a faulty ?

To siputngebut : There are some possibilities whenever the red flashing light on sierra 881U. First 1 is the battery inside is recharging and the 2nd possiblity is the battery itself is not working and can’t be detected by modem. I’m not sure about the failed error, becoz haven’t encountered this problem before.

I bought the Sierra 881 PCMCIA card, install the software that is on the cd. Next insert
the card in my laptop and tried it in my car and also outside my car.
But unfortunately, the card did not pick any satellite signals at all.
I tired a few times, i.e. turn off the 3G watcher and run it again and still no GPS display. So I am wondering whether I have duped by the seller?
Got any suggestion? I need help desparately…….

Hi ghufxpert,
I have double checked with my seller, he said that the device has already unlocked.
If it is locked, you will not able see the option: “Display GPS” in the 3G watcher software. This option should be greyed out.
I am just wondering does this device really works at all.
If not, I will not recommend my friends to buy.

Liukuohao : We you use the GPS mode make sure that there is no obstacle ( Line of Sight ) toward sky. if the problem still persist then i’m not sure about your case..have to consult back with the seller.

I am using the AT&T 881 PCMCIA version and got GPS signals going, etc. but Garmin Mobile PC does not seem to recognize the device. Running 3G watcher Version R3.0.0.9.1822 (36.48 MB) [9/5/2008] — cannot find the menu instructions “Tools->MP Physical Interface-> Select USB-> OK (one time setup)”.. can you email me the right versions for either or both the Garmin Mobile/3G Watcher to use? You can enable voice on sierra 881U, i’ve tried it, just download the dc-unlocker client (latest) and buy the credit to unlocked it, just 1 euro.

Hi There,
I just have sierra wireless aircard 881 PCMCIA about 2 weeks ago, then i get some information from 3g-watcher program;
3g wathcher R3.0.0.9 build 1822,
firmware; F1_2_3_15CAP
buid; 09/10/08
botloader; F1_2_3_15BT
From the sticker below the aircard i saw CATEGORY 8 which mean this aircard support LINK DL/ 7,2mbps and UL/ 2,0 mbps. That i concern now is why if i looking to WAN (network-aircard) link symbol which i got from the connection of my ISP it’s only at 3,6 mbps.
The question now is am i have to change the firmware or what can i do to upgrade it into 7,6 mbps..?? Could you give me the direct link to the firmware..??
The last, what the consequence that i get if i change basic firmware..??

Dear sandhy : Have to ask you a little bit details, if you’re using 3G Watcher,when you’re connected to the network,the wireless icon will appear on the taskbar..the simplest way to check if your device already upgraded to support 7.2 is when popup ballon appear stating that you’re connected with 7.2 Mbps. If not you aircard still on 3.6Mbps. But if your package( internet package) is up to 3.6 Mbps only, no need to upgrade. BTW with Telco do you use?

when i already connect to the network of my ISP, the baloon popup apppear with 3,6 mbps (Speed: 3,6 mbps) at toolbar near clock. am i have to upgrade firmware..???
my ISP using Indosatm2.com wich support 3g also 3,5g.

I have a pcmcia 881, upgraded the firmware as described here and now ‘watcher’ shows GPS monitor. However, it never gets the satellite tracking working, … always ends in session failure.
Does this need an antenna? (i see a port on the card).
How can I tell what is wrong?

Hi ghufxpert, I got a Sierra Aircard881U/Apex880, got the firmware updated, got the got the Generic watcher and got a workable garmin mobile pc, however I just couldn’t get the modem to work, not even as a 3g modem and it can’t get a satellite fix at all. Could you pls help? Thanks

Google earth works too! There is no need to obtain cracked copy of garmin mobile pc. After getting satellite fix in 3g watcher, run google earth and enable gps feature from options window.
