Sharing your Celcom Broadband in easy way:Part 1

Date January 4, 2008

Dear all readers, I hope it is not too late for me to wish a Happy New Year for all. December 2007 is the busiest month for me, I can’t even post an article. Sorry to keep you waiting for so long.

I received many calls, mostly from students that keep asking me on how to share the Celcom Broadband with their colleague. So today I will show you how to share Celcom Broadband in an easy way. For the first part, I will introduce a device that can be used to share your internet connection using Celcom Broadband.

The device is D-Link DIR 451 3G Mobile Router

D-link DIR 451

Basically this is how its works:

  • The D-Link 3G Mobile Router DIR-451 is on-the-go internet sharing devices. The 3G Mobile Router DIR-451 enables user to quickly create a secure wireless 802.11g (108G) network and provide access to the Internet using your Celcom Broadband. By connecting an UMTS(3G), or HSDPA Internet PC card to the 3G Mobile Router, an Internet connection can be accessed and shared virtually anywhere within a wireless broadband network.

The details view on the rear side:Rear Dir 451

  • The Internet PC Card slot is where you put your 3G/HSDPA datacard, so you don’t have to plugged in the 3G datacard through your laptop or dekstop pc.The router acts as the modem and switch/hub altogether on one device. For sure you need to have a 3G datacard to make it works :-)
  • The router have 4 10/100 Ethernet ports meaning you can share up to four person by wired (LAN Cable). The router also works on wireless since there is an antenna at the edge of the router. In the admin panel on the router there are many features you can set like Network Key(WEP) where you can put a password on the network that only certain people can enter your network.
  • Not all 3G/HSDPA datacards are compatible with this product, here I list out the compatible datacard models :
  • Option GT 3G Quad/Wireless GT Quad
  • Sierra Wireless Aircard 875/860
  • Novatel Wireless Merlin U740/U730/U530
  • Huawei E600 / E620 / E220 (USB)

Here are some of the real screen shots taken using Sierra 875 Wireless Aircard :

I’m currently using the Dlink Dir451 router without using any datacard but using my motorola v3xx hsdpa handphone. The phone is connected to the usb socket that you can see in the picture above using a usb cable.
So for those who already have the moto v3xx, you don’t have to buy a hsdpa datacard to use with this router.
Speed wise and ease of use, i’ll rate the router an 8 out of 10 as it also comes with turbo G mode (108 mbps) for wireless files transfer.

How about setting Bard? Can you tell us?

    Quote

  3. Bard said:

Firstly, do not upgrade to firmware 1.02b as the router won’t be able to recognize the v3xx. Instead use only firmware 1.02sea (dated 19-7-07) as i found out that this is the only firmware that supports the v3xx without any glitches.
CAUTION ! Connect to router using only the utp cable for flashing the firmware.

Then you should proceed with the internet connection wizard and choose the isp card option as HSDPA-Maxis-Motorola Phone RAZRV3xx (USB). Leave every other option at their default settings except for APN value, which you must enter celcom3g in order for you to use celcom’s broadband services.

Save you settings and the router will auto reboot. The router should be able to detect the moto v3xx now and log on to hsdpa signal. The usb blue led should be blinking also indicating usb modem presence.

You can then proceed to setup the wireless settings for the router in the normal manner to configure your wireless settings, and setup your wep or wpa security codes.

Hope the info helps. I struggled for 4 hours trying to get the router to recognize my moto v3xx before succeeding. Teruk betui la.

Emm,when i purchased for Dir-451,the firmware already in version 1.02b although it’s displayed as “1.02_WW” in admin panel..so is there is a turning back in firmware?Because from what I’m heard there is no turning back after you flashing the firmware? So how about that Bard?

    Quote

  5. Bard said:

Bought the router with ver 1.01SEA as the factory installed firmware but unable to detect v3xx (I suspect that my unit belongs to the first batch due to the old firmware). So i flashed it to version 1.02b which is the latest beta version from dlink’s website but still it wouldn’t detect. I flashed again to version 1.02SEA also from dlink’s site and thank god, it worked.

Indeed, there’s no such thing as the unit cannot be flashed to another older firmware to as i have managed to do so personally. Hmm it’s either that or newer batches of the routers can’t be reflashed, that’s my wild guess.

Preferably, i would love to get something that is more mobile like this baby for example http://www.rfwel.com/shop/catalog/CradlePoint-USB-Cellular-Travel-Router-p-1061.html

Just wished that we have more than one option for hsdpa routers for the 2100 frequency. Any chances of you taking in samples like the above for testing :)

  8. ashraf said:

D98=1.8Mbps tu kira average la kan Bard? boleh dapat sampai 2.4Mbps macam ada sorang celcom bb user at sri rampai, wangsa maju ni http://www.speedtest.net/result/221731724.png thanks to celcom ^^ for the submit.

If using the prepaid(Xpax),what is the overall speed…is it UMTS(3G) or HSDPA or both?

    Quote

  10. ashraf said:

from the celcom website,u can see that xpax users can only use UMTS on daily basis for rm8/day.if u wish to use HSDPA,then u need to subscribe on pay-per-use basis.but the information provided quite confusing n redundant because it’s also been stated that the daily package could also cover HSDPA.but the sure thing is that xpax users cant subscribe monthly package.

    Quote

  11. Bard said:

Ashraf..yup, you’re right. 1.8mbps is the average to almost all celcom’s users. I personally pun have never hit speeds above 190 Kbps during my numerous download sessions (190 X 8 = 1.52 Mbps). Those who managed to clock higher than this must be in low user areas where they can hog the available bandwidth :) .
Dunno when we can achieve speeds of 3.6 Mbps as advertised by them.

    Quote

  12. Timothy said:

So If i’m using Xpax….I can only reach UMTS speed and not HSDPA speed….I’m quite confused here…as I heard from celcom centre that Xpax 3G can go to HSDPA speed…..so please clarify this for me….Is Xpax 3G can only get UMTS speed and not HSDPA speed or can get both?….

If possible, plz clarify this question of mine to any celcom centre as I’m confused….

    Quote

  13. ashraf said:

haha..please dont ask me more mr.timothy.i’m not working in celcom.maybe those who had subscribed for xpax 3g can share their experience with us?where r u living timothy?the best thing is u try it yourself timothy.others’ opinions may vary because of differences in coverage.u can try by subscribing for rm8/day.check the signal strentgh in ur area n use speedtest.if u r not satisfied, better unsubscribe.but if u wish to use it in abundant, better switch to the data plan.much much better.

    Quote

  14. Timothy said:

ok..ok…I got a question to ask…If I’m using a 3G/HSDPA Modem(of any kind) and not using a 3G/HSDPA enabled Hp…and I’m using Xpax 3G….Is it possible or not to use Xpax 3G in the modem…If can…what are their pros and cons….

    Quote

  15. myceloteh admin said:

    Yes absolutely possible,
When you use Xpax 3G you still can received call and sms,by using Sierra Voice enable, you can make call while surfing to the internet,by using headset. The cons is you have to pay more than unlimited plan, one day RM8 and for 1 month is RM 240 compared to unlimited plan only RM68 per month, futhermore the modem itself specially design for 3G/HSDPA signal, then antenna is very good compared to antenna in your HP,because some of the user that using HP as modem claimed that they got slow connection compared when using datacard,so by using datacard you got more signal strength, you can save your HP battery as well by using datacard/modem.

    Quote

  16. ashraf said:

if u r a heavy downloader, i suggest u to use the rm68 data plan postpaid instead of xpax.in other words, u should have another sim for your modem. it is much easier.hp will be overheated if u use it as a modem extensively.

    Quote

  17. Bard said:

True, excessive heat is the main of all electrical appliances. If using handphones as your modem for prolonged periods and with heavy downloads, get a small fan (i.e usb powered fan) to cool down your phone.
For the record, i’ve been using my trusty v3xx as my main modem with the same battery for the last 7 months using this method. So far, the battery’s performance dropped by 25% in terms of charge holding. Heck, compatible batteries are priced below rm20 these days so it’s no big deal to buy a new battery for every year. Just ensure that you have sufficient cooling to the phone and you can rest assured that the phone will perform all day long without a hitch.
With regards to the using external antennae to boost up you signals, well i can say that this is just a clever marketing ploy by the manufacturers. Even when the v3xx registers a low hsdpa signal of 1 bar, it still manages to download at speeds in excess of 1 Mbps constantly. Just ensure that you set the phone reception option to
    receive 2100 signal only.
Best if you can borrow you friend’s hsdpa datacard and hsdpa phone to test at your computer at home before making your purchase.

    Quote

  18. ashraf said:

Yup, Bard is right. But if possible please avoid compatible batteries or at least take precautious steps. Massive heat can easily melt down the battery and the phone as well if you dont use any cooling tool. If you’re unlucky enough, the cells may radiate and explode. People tend to ignore because they had never experienced it with their bare eyes. So, keep your 3G phone away from children!

  31. Bard said:

Your bandluxe c100 usb modem is supported by the dir451 router. However, you need to ensure that you have firmware v1.02_WW to pair it together. Check your current firmware before attempting to flash the router as you may already be using v1.02_WW as the default firmware.

Here’s the full range of devices currently supported by the dir451 for hsdpa

    Sierra Wireless AirCard 860
    Novatel Wireless Merlin U730
    Sierra Wireless AirCard 875
    Sierra Wireless AirCard 865
    Novatel Wireless Merlin U740
    Option GT Fusion+HSDPA
    Option GT 3G+ / Fusion+
    Huawei E620
    Huawei E220 (USB)
    Option GT MAX
    Motorola Phone RAZA V3XX (USB)
    Option GT 7.2 Ready
    BandLuxe C100
    Novatel Wireless Merlin XU870

Hope that this list would be a good reference to those intending to buy the dir451.

thanks bard for the info, but another question for you. what’s the date for firmware 1.02ww? the one on the dlink website is for 1.02b4 dated 1/10/08. where can i find the firmware 1.02ww?

    Quote

  33. Bard said:

Don’t worry, v1.02b is actually the firmware of 1.02_ww. Once you have flashed it, you will see v1.02_ww in the configurations page of the router.

Do download the firmware from dlink’s singapore site although their site remains down for the time being.

Post us your findings here when you have managed to pair the router.

nak tanya.. i da subscribe celcom broadband yg pakej rm68 tu.. skang pki datacard as modem.model merlin u530. persoalannya la kan.. mana tau kut2 ada org bole bg idea.. masalahnya kat area sg besi ni 3g signal nak xnak jer. abes tinggi pun 2 bar jer.. kkdang drop smpi xleh connect. ada x cara nak boost signal tu dengan mncipta kaedah baru seperti lilit waayar kat data card tu ker. letak periuk kat bwh tu ker. bila kol jer celcom alasannya kami mmg ada masalah waktu tu.. xkan hari2 celcom ada problem kut.. thanks pada yg nak mmbntu.
lg satu bape harga router kt atas tu?

  35. ashraf said:

haha..menarik gak ur idea tu. :D area sungai besi memang signal 3g x brape stabil..ada banyak cara nak boost signal.ada yg letak cd kosong kat usb sierra 875u.ada yg buat grid antenna sendiri.but then..tak semestinya antenna yg kita buat sendiri tu akan boost signal.ada yg akan reduce signal strength.sebab antenna ni ada macam2 jenis.dari jenis yagi-uda yg kat atas rumah korang (bukan dish antenna yg astro tu), sampai la ke yg paling simple macam patch and dipole.sebab tu x semestinya kalau rumah kita dekat ngan tower, signal strength excellent. harga router yang myceloteh admin bagi rm1100. sekali ngan sierra 875 pcmcia. kalau nak router tu je, kena tanya sendiri admin la. :P

ni lg satu nak tanya, ok. i subscribe yg 384kbps tu then pki novatel u530. seperti yg kita tau novatel u530 ni bole support max smpi 384kbps jer.. so klu la i nak upgrade beli yg modem mahal sket boleh support up smpi 3.6mbps tu. bole ker i dpt speed lbh
dri apa yg i subcribe skang ni ler..
ada apa2 efek x?? lg laju ker. signal kuat ker?? walaupun kita just subscribe yg rm68 tu jer.
    ada saper2 ada pengalaman ker..

wsalam..hfzl.gi tengok speedtest result celcom kat 3G support forum myceloteh ni and u boleh nampak bezanya.memang ada differrence.sebab reception modem 3.6Mbps or 7.2Mbps is much better.data rate pun bleh naik especially kalau u dalam hsdpa coverage area.

so ni nak tuka la ni modem ni.. tgk macam Sierra Wireless Aircard 875 tu bagus jer..
    power betul ker??
aritu da tanya ada satu mamat celcom ni. dia ada syor yg kicik skit, tp support hsdpa jnama aper ntah xigt la.. i ada ckp naper x prefer Sierra Wireless Aircard 875 tu?
then dia cakap itu model lama. skang semua kecik2 jer..
so aper pendapat korang? mmg betul ker Sierra Wireless Aircard 875 terbagus?

    Quote

  41. ashraf said:

yang mamat celcom tu recommend maybe expresscard format punya.yang popular brand option ngan novatel..memang kecik, cuma harga die lagi besar.expresscard ni untuk laptop model baru (beli dalam 6 bulan lepas ke..) n sierra aircard 875 ni format pcmcia untuk laptop model lama.sebab tu die cakap model lama.tapi still dikilangkan sampai sekarang.cuma kebelakangan ni harga modem sierra seluruh dunia cam naik sket.

karut la bro celcom tu..since your laptop guna novatel u530 (format pcmcia),kenapa nak suruh beli expresscard.dah la lagi mahal.

    Quote

  42. hfzl said:

bro… yg tu pcmcia jgak.. bukan express card.. i tau bezanya..

klu i bli jgak yg siera tu, boleh dpt lbh ker dri apa yg i subscribe..
    i mean more than 384kbps

Dear Bard,

Thanks for the advice. I have contacted dlink office via e-mail and still awating for their reply. Will post the outcome once I receive the reply. I have also contacted one user of the said Vodafone Option GlobeTrotter Express 3G HSDPA 7.2Mbps. According to him, the signal is more stable as compared with other pc express card. He also was’t sure whether it can be compatible with dlink router. He will revert back to me if he has the answer/solution.

Actually, the reason why I decided for this path was because I don’t want to use the USB port for any device that support it. All the notebook come with pcmcia slot and the new version pc express card slot. So instead of using the USB port, I strongly believe to use these slot as it has been dedicated for such use.

Anyway, will still pursuing the matter and seek some advice from bro/sis who might been using it. I think the said pc express card c/w the adapter is still new in the market. I was in KL last week and went to Low Yat to seek some answer, but all the dealer do not know this card model is available in the market. Well from e-bay, there are these item on sale.

    Cheers and warm regards.

I do agree that the pcmcia / express slots are meant for communications. Anyway, the trend nowdays is geared more towards the usb version of modems.

Since all of your notebooks comes with pcmcia slots you are thus safe to get this type of card for the 451. It’s already tested and proven to pair nicely with the 451 without any glitches. Also, there are no performance advantage to gained by using the express card over pcmcia. They are only different in size. I suspect that the notebook manufacturers came up with express card format to force consumers like us to purchase new gears for the benefit of the manufacturers.

Another way is of course to test the items at the shop before you purchase so as you be sure that they work. I know, it’s quite difficult to find store owners who not only stock these rare products but also willing to let you test them first before buying.

If you’re by any chance in penang then you’re in luck. We have a regular forumner whom happens to own a store selling these two items that you’re eyeing. It is his usual practice to set up the equipment and configure it correctly before letting buyers test them out until they’re trully satisfied. Very nice chap with good business ethics i’ll say.

Other than that Afak, you’re stuck with the usb version of modems i.e e220 or bandluxe c100 etc as the 451 only caters for pcmcia and usb inputs only. They used to sell another brand of Hsdpa router under Linksys but somehow it was discontinued and this only comes with the pcmcia flavour minus the usb.

Actually if you’re playing with the admin page of the router you can see the list of datacards supported by this modem, you ‘ll find the Huawei E220 is in the list,so there is no doubt that this modem supported by this router.

For usb + Express datacard to Dir451,hurmm it is rare combination i think, but i’m not sure about the results, didn’t test it yet.

For D-Link DIR 451,actually to be honest to you guy,I’ve really bad experience selling this router.i got several customer bought this router, but almost all the router have to go to D-Link warranty dept.I dunno why the router frequently disconnect for several times, also have the problem to access the admin area, have to wait 1 month for D-Link to fix it up.

  69. Bard said:

Dear mod, sad to know that you having nightmares from the 451. I’d guess that most buyers of the 451 would update the firmware themselves without having proper knowledge. That’s the reason i’d guess for the high number of returns.

To make matters worse, the 451 has got no competitors at all in it’s class. That might be the reason for the awfully long 1 month to fix defective units.

On the frequent disconnections…well i do face this problem intermittently. This is mainly due to the sudden drop in the umts signals which forced then 451 to drop wifi signal as well. Anyway, there is an option for auto connect to overcome this. On most days when the umts signal is at it’s normal, the 451 works without any hiccups.

I’d advise you to save the settings of your customers configurations (done through the admin pages) and advise your customers to restore the last known good settings to unbundle whatever changes they have wrongly made. Saves you from all of their troubles :)

Here’s a good tip for those having frequent disconnections with the DIR451.

    1) Go to admin page of the router and select the setup tab and select internet
    2) Click on “manual configure” button under manual internet connection option
    3) Change the entry for Keep-alive interval form 60 seconds (default) to the maximum amount of 999999 seconds.
    4) Click on save settings.

The router will auto reboot and you should be able to surf nicely minus the frequent annoying disconnections.

I recently moved to Indonesia and have spent several months looking for a good broadband solution. Anyway…. I settled on the D-link DIR-451 & Huawei E220 combination. I bought these devices from Rama Center in Denpasar.

We have been really pleased with the result and so far it it reliable and has decent speed (speedtest.net = 2,060 kbps download).

The connection is more reliable and much more stable than when using the E220 directly on my laptop. ‘go figure!’. Further to this, it means that we can WiFi both laptops and use Skype phone with almost no hassles.

I have a couple of points:

    The GOOD:
    – So much easier to use, just open your laptop and it always is ready to go WiFi online. No more messing about with silly dialler software like ‘Mobile Connect’ & ‘Mobile Partner’ that was supplied with the Huawei E220.

    – Speed is great, but the upload is a little slow. Eitherway, it is more than enough for a few computers and devices in our home.

    – So much simpler for my girlfriend than swapping the E220 from laptop to laptop.

    The BAD:
    – Dynamic DNS feature works perfectly, but it appears that “port forwarding” does not seem to work properly.

    – For External access to the router’s web interface (ie from another location, I wanted to change the port for this from 80 to 8080 for better security. Regardless of which port you change it to, it ignores it and the web interface still only respnds to port 80 when using monitoring externally.

    – We went on a trip for 2 days, so I switched off the router and took the E220 for use on the road. After we returned, I plugged the E220 back to the USB port, then powered up the router. Here is the bad part… ALL the configurations had been lost. It is like it had been reset to factory defaults.

    MY Four Questions:

Q1 – The DIR-451 that I have reports a firmware of 1.02_WW. I see on D-link’s “.com.sg” website that the latest is currently 1.02B019. How do I determine exactly which firmware I have? Should I upgrade? (a bit scared!)

Q2 – Do any of you have issues with the port forwarding problem?

Q3 – Do any of you have issues with configurations and settings being lost if the unit is switched off for a few days?

Q4 – Can any of you get the router external web interface to respond properly on any port other than port-80?

I can see that Bard (and others) works hard to look after people here, and I want to thank you for the info and support. Thankyou in advance.

    Kind Regards,
    M..

    Hi Mickp !

It’s great to know that this forum reaches as far as indonesia ! And from your speedtest, wireless broadband speed really rocks there as well.

    As to your enquiries,

    1) To know your present firmware you need to
Go to the admin pages , click on status. It will display your current firmware version here.
Yes, the 1.02B019 is the latest firmware for the dir451. I’ve personally updated to that version after updating my sierra 875 to 7.2mbps capable. Personally, the router is much stable after the firmware upgrade.
Should you upgrade ? There’s really no harm in trying. After all, the latest firmware incorporates your e220 at the maximum allowable speed of 7.2mbps.

    2) The port forwarding function is only activated if your broadband provider allows it. Here in malaysia, i can’t port forward my connections because celcom does not allow it. Hmm… so much for having that option…

    3) I’ve go no problems with settings being wiped out. In this case you should indeed update your firmware to rectify this issue. If that does not work, you can always save your settings under tools and clicking systems. In case that your settings are wiped out again, you could always restore it by uploaqding the previous settings. A few clicks and your 451 is good again.

    4) If you’re using firefox browser to view webpages, try to use explorer instead. I believe the dir451 works best with explorer to tinker with the port 80.

Lastly, i sure hope that we can keep helping fellow users of the 451 in their issues.

    Thanks and best wishes.

    Hello there…

I have updated to ‘1.02B019′ firmware, and so far so good. The port forwarding functons properly now. I was also able to have the external web interface respond properly on alternate port 8080.

After emailing The D-link support guy the same question over & over, he finally told me that you can find the firmware that was pre-loaded by looking at a tiny little label on the underside of the router. It had been on 1.02B010. My eyes could only just see the label.

As you know, the status page doesn’t show the “B0xx” firmware detail. It simply says:
    “Firmware Version: 1.02_WW , Tue, 11 Mar 2008″

The good news. Seems these little issues have been resolved for now. Backed up all the settings to a file as you recommended.

For us, we use ISP “CBN.net.id” for a good value plan. These guys are using Indo’s “XL” HSDPA network for delivery and we are lucky enough to be in a very stong reception area. It comes with a public IP, which was not available by other Indo 3g plans.

Anyway, now fully happy with the router, and would strongly recommended it to others. I have all the remote access options that I needed working.

Indonesia suffers from very limited, slow and seemingly expensive broadband plans. Especially if you are outside of the major cities. Having never used 3g data until 2 weeks ago, I was really unsure how well it would work. It is great that we didn’t make the mistake on installing an expensive fixed phone line and sign up for a slow 384kbps adsl deal. From what I am now experiencing with 3g HSPDA and this smart 451 router , we are streets ahead of this for a fraction of the cost.

The router seems to “smooth” the data flow as compared to using the modem directly. A Skype telephone call will run endlessly with the 451 for us. We had bad drop-outs before this.

    Good Stuff!
    Thanks again.

    mickp,

beta versions of firmwares are best avoided like the plague due to it’s incompleteness and tendencies to hang your router. I’m sure once they have fully tested, the hey would sign and post the latest patch for us to download.

I’m pretty much happy with with the current version that both of us are using as almost all of the nagging issues have been ironed out. Been using the sierra 875 after ditching my previous globetrotter gt max because of it’s weak signal issues. So far, the 875 and the 451 pairs like a gem.
