Ovationâ„¢ MC950D and MC930D 7.2 USB Modems – HSDPA/HSUPA Networks

Novatel just released its new Ovation MC930D & MC950 USB modem that will hit theoretical download rates of 7.2Mbps as well as upload rates of 2.1Mbps. This Ovation series Ovation MC950D and MC930D are designed to support various platforms including Windows, Mac, and Linux. MC950D is a tri-band modem while MC930D is a single-band type. The USB form factor makes for a truly versatile device, as it is smaller and more widely available than a traditional PCMCIA card.

No wires, no battery, no hassles
With Ovation connectivity is on the fly! Unlike other devices, Ovation MC950D and MC930D don’t use batteries. Get connected wherever, whenever, and for as long as you need; not as long as your battery will last. No costly battery replacements, no additional chargers to lug about in your baggage, no unnecessary stress. Ovation is designed to make your life easier, not give you another thing to worry about (or carry around).

Lose the CD: Software, drivers, and user guides are on the device
MobiLink™ Lite Connection Manager software and drivers for Windows are included on the device. Connect to the Internet without the need to install drivers from a CD, just plug it in, allow the software and drivers to automatically load and you’re ready!

The million dollar question is, when will such items be sold at the same cheap price here in malaysia as compared to other countries.

Most of our retailers that are currently offering hsdpa datacards and usb modems are parallel importers which in any case can’t provide the manufacturer’s standard warranty. As such, prices are not being regulated and if you compare apple to apple, our pricing of hsdpa modems are pretty much bordering to exhorbitant as compared to our neighbours.

Aren’t the margins provided by the manufacturer’s profitable for such a device until none of us in malaysia are willing to be their authorised distributor ? Or is it there are not enough demand to warrant manufacturer to set up a distributorship ?
As i see it, you should pay no more than RM500 for a hsdpa usb modem. Anything above that goes to the pockets of the so called grey/parallel importers and hoping that the device can last through their 6 months warranty instead of the original 12 months.

Huh.. What can we expect from our current local broadband market? There are only half million wireless broadband users compared to 26 million Malaysians. Mobile phone distributors will surely make money in any part of the country. Lots of us own more than one handphone rite? :D The price of datacards and modems in Indonesia are quite similar to the ones we could get here even though there are authorized modem dealers available. The number of mobile broadband users in Indonesia is two times larger than us and there are three mobile broadband providers (including IndoSAT). But it is admitted that the global demand for wireless broadband is increasing rapidly. A reliable source from Sierra Wireless USA told that the price of Sierra datacard will hikes. Hopefully we are not going to be affected as most of the Sierra datacards sold here were directly imported from Sierra manufacturer in China. :P

  3. Jom Cyber says:

jadi ini bermakna novatel merlin akan turun harga.

  4. ashraf says:

harap2 la.. ;) memang authorized sierra supplier sendiri yang cakap harga aircard 875 (either pcmcia or usb) akan naik tak lama lagi.tapi info tu cuma bersumberkan sierra wireless usa..sierra manufacturer kat china tak cakap apa2 pun.cuma diorang admit demand naik. :P

  5. Bard says:

Dear Ashraf, I find it very odd that prices of hsdpa modem will increase soon as usually it does the opposite for almost all computer related hardware.

The only hardware price that fluctuates are memory and processor. Even these eventually gradually come down in their pricing when newer and better hardware are introduced.

It’s either that sudden increase in demand cannot cope up with their supply or there’s a shortfall in one of the components of the modem. Anyway, consumers always have a choice of using hsdpa capable mobile phones as their modems as their prices are always more transparent because of healthy competition.

  6. ashraf says:

Haha.. I too find it quite strange when an authorized Sierra distributor in Indonesia told me about the hike. :D

Because nowadays we could see that the price of hsdpa modems here (including in Low Yat) are gradually decreasing. Not a single projection trend occur. But if the rumour on rising demand is to be true, the price of hsdpa modems should be lower (except for Sierra, maybe), and it sounds to be a good advantage for us – the end-users. :P

Using a hsdpa mobile phone surely looks versatile. It’s good to have various choice of equipment that can suit our personal needs by the way. ;)

    Heya,
Is this product rather new to Malaysian market?Do you have this product in your shop since it looks very interesting…

Is there any review for this product…..I kinda like this kind of model since it doesn’t require Installation CD and it is already in the USB modem’s memory…..and so reduce the hassles of finding the CD to install the connection manager…..

Does it really works on Celcom BB and Maxis BB?Does it disconnect often? What is the average speed using this model?

    To Ashraf:
Ya….I really noticed that when new model of 3G/HSDPA modem of all kinds and brands arrive in the Malaysian market, the price for the older ones get lower than the market price…..I really do hope that the 3G/HSDPA/HSUPA modems of all kinds and brands get lower and affordable since the demand for wireless internet is good.

  8. tsaiful says:

  9. adammale says:

setakat ni tak pernah lagi jumpa modem sebegini, kalau ada berapa harganya dan di mana boleh memperolehinya? satu lagi yang penting adalah, adakah ia selalu disconnected? actually, i’ve just use celcom broadband this several months and i found out that the connection is slower in the evening but speed up in the morning. and one more thing, i bought the huawei modem for rm888, as someone pointed out in one of the comments, you should buy the modem less than rm500… i’m so unlucky…huhu…i think i was being “pukau” to buy the modem that day…but seriously, kalau ada modem usb yang very simple and easy like this, i’m gonna get it..assuming that the price is lower than rm500…and yeah, hsdpa rules these days, too bad iphone doesn’t have both hsdpa and 3g, though it has wifi :P

    To Awang:
You may get the modem from the “Blue Cube” store located at Billion supermart, it’s just next to the DiGi specialized store. Alternatively, you can purchase it at the Celcom broadband booth located in Giant hypermart.

I purchased the modem on November 2008 and subscibed to DATA68 plan which promised to provide the best download speed of 384kbps at RM68/month; it’s a 1-year subscription contract with Celcom broadband which costed me RM667 (RM599 for the modem + RM68 as deposit for the 1st month’s bill). However, you may opt for the modem ONLY without any contract, at the price of RM699. The prices quoted are as at November 2008, perhaps it’s cheaper now.

The modem itself works well, but I could’t be bothered by the poor internet service provided by Celcom. When I was using the internet for the 1st time, it worked really well, the bandwidth reached about 330kbps, it was outreaching my expectation. And the download speed was plummeting to as low as 16kbps as time goes by.

If you’re really into this so-called wireless internet for its “promising” NO FUSS, NO WIRES, NO HASSLE, VERSATILITY, you’d better say YES to the NO SOLUTION. Perhaps the technology is still growing (in a slow pace), you therefore shouldn’t expect it will work better or same as Slowmyx. I heard Maxis broadband is even worse?

Sememangnya apa shaja model HSDPA modem ssuai ngan Sim Card 3G Celcom prepaid tapi masa subscribe daily broadband RM6 tu kene guna henpon dulu pastu baru transfer sim card tu ke dalam modem tu. Then beresss. Pss. Maxis punya daily broadband Rm8 x buleh pakai guna modem HSDPA boleh pake henpon 3G jer.. Kalau buleh sori yer sebab saya dah cube beribu kali pun mmg x leh . Dah call customer service pun x leh. Ok Thanks. :|
